Bunka
wrote musical scores for the films "Warshots" and "Ende einer Reise" by
Heiner Stadler
(Bavarian Film Prize 1992), and a film based on three short-stories by
Paul Bowles entitled "Halbmond" by Frieder
Schlaich. This work established Bunka as a composer
capable of using his oriental sound collages to skillfully advance the
dramatic action in films. In 1998 with the Spanish Flamenco guitarist
Tomatito he
composed and recorded the music for the film "Bin ich schön!?", directed
by the prominent German film director Doris
Dörrie. ( Soundtrack on Virgin Rec.)
Crossing
over to yet another media, Bunka, in collaboration with Grace
Yoon, produced several radio-plays for German Radio.
The BBC awarded the "Prix Futura 1993" to the one entitled "Tunguska-Guska".
This and Bunka and Yoon´s radio-play "Earborn" are available on CD (Schneeball
and Jaro Rec.).
Bunka´s
award-winning work also includes the live recording of his project "Color
Me Cairo" featuring the Fathy
Salama Ensemble from Egypt and Malachi
Favors from the legendary
"Art Ensemble of Chicago". It appeared on the ENJA label and received
the German Record Critics Prize. ("Color me Cairo", ENJA
rec.)
Ever
the musical pioneer, in 1999 Bunka and his group ( featuring indian percussionist
Ramesh Shotam
and japanese violinist Hiromi
Nishida) performed at the first Oriental-Jazz-Festival
in Beirut. To celebrate the new millennium, he participated (with Mal
Waldron, Jeanne Lee, Tri-O,
Peter Dicke and Blixa Bargeld ) in Grace Yoon´s multimedia-event
"Illusion des Endes". (WDR 1999).
The
year 2000 was launched at a live concert event in front of the Great Pyramids
at Giza with Egyptian singer Mohamed Mounir.
"... there,
between his fingers, the modi and scales of the arabic mystic meet with
the electrifying ease of the urban Bluesmen. Roman Bunka is the mediator
and the center of a world-music fusion, call it success, joy or utopia
if you want to describe it!"
